I like Edwin's ideas.
Stored Procedures (Java), Transactions, and Replication seem the most interesting.
May 3rd @ DB sounds good to me.

Yes, that is the plan. Being a new group, I would like the members
feedback on discussion topics, meeting location, time/date, etc... I
have heard no strong objections to Dave and Busters as I suggested in my
meeting followup e-mail. Does anyone have suggestions on these topics?
I think Dave & Busters should be fine. The only question would be whether a projector would be helpful. The only suggestions for topics that I have heard is a comparison of MySQL and Postgres, which was mentioned by Vidyut and Tweeks. That is sort of a wide open topic, so I am going to throw out some ideas of what could be discussed for either:
* Replication
* Backups
* Connecting using PHP, Python, Ruby, or Java. There are definite caveats for different drivers, so this could be interesting though I don't think we could cover more than a couple of languages in one meeting.
* Optimization via analysis, query rewriting, schema design, db configuration, OS configuration, HW setup, or prepared statements.
* Desktop/Web administration clients for browsing tables, exporting data to spreadsheets, diagramming table relationships, etc.
* Full text indexing.
* Storing binary large objects (blobs) in the db.
* Using Unicode or other charsets.
* Date and time types and usage guidelines. (e.g. Should a timezone be stored or should all the timestamps assume the same timezone?)
* 2-phase commit, aka XA transactions.
* Host/user access control.
* Stored procedures in pl/pgsql, perl, python, php (why?), java, or C.
So, is anybody interested in these?
I'm going to throw out some dates just because it is easier to complain about a date than it is to suggest one. How about Saturday, May 3 @ noon (D&B opens at 11:30am) or Tuesday, May 6 @ 7pm (an SQL meetup will help your Cinco de Mayo hangover).
